How we Met:
I have known James’ family for over 15 years. His little sister (Meghan) and my little sister (Laura) were best friends growing up. Because of our siblings friendships, our families grew up together and aside from our sisters we also knew each others parents. We all went to the same little Catholic School in Plymouth growing up but I never knew James as he was my senior (always 4 years ahead of me in school). I use to take Laura and Meghan to the movies, drop them off at the mall… but did not meet Mister James until two years ago (in June). Our sisters were talking and came up with the great idea to introduce their single siblings to the other (again since James and I did not know each other due to our age difference) this would be our first meeting. James shot me an e-mail on facebook (was right around my birthday). Then we agreed to a drink. We had both been through a serious relationship that ended sadly. At the time we met we were both just living life, having fun w/ no commitments/ anything serious. I was actually planning on moving to Chicago at the end of the summer and told him that on our very first date. Our first date we met to have a drink, of course, per usual, I had a canned lie prepared to vacate the date (since most my dates leading up to James) were everything but desirable. James and I laughed and shared stories about our very strict days of attending Catholic School and we really hit it off. The rest is kind of history. At the end of the summer James jokingly asked me if I was still planning on moving to Chicago, and we both just basically giggled! We both feel truly blessed and lucky to have found each other. We often agree that in life it is all about timing and for that we feel like we met at the absolute perfect time. I never dreamed that I would end up with a McFarlane but now I can’t imagine it any other way. James and I enjoy the little things in life. We appreciate each other, our values and quite honestly just have a blast even when we are doing nothing together! James loves my independence, feistiness and love for sports. I love James loyalty, patience and happy-go-lucky side.
Well, I was floored when James proposed. I was coming off a very nasty work week where I was working over 12 hour days and getting ready for a “save our life” client meeting. We had planned to go out with friends on the weekend (or so I thought). On Thursday I had shared with James that I was not going to be able to hang over the weekend as work needed my undivided attention. James shared that he was super bummed, and shared that our friends actually cancelled so he went ahead and planned a fun get-away evening Downtown Detroit. I surely could not cancel on a fun night out with James so I got all the work done and we headed downtown. He had a room for us at the Westin Book Cadillac and dinner planned at Roast. We had a fabulous dinner and a few drinks. Then headed upstairs to the hotel for a breather before leaving to go to MGM Grand. There were all kinds of funny weird things going on but I was so caught up in my work mind that I failed to see the writing on the wall. James pulled out a bottle of champagne and said that we have a toast to make… I was thinking to myself, what… for what! He said to us, we have a celebration to toast to and then right there he got down on his knee and proposed. I was shocked, think I laughed (a nervous laugh) and then cried. I could not believe it- I thought he was going to propose in Costa Rica as we had that scheduled trip for a few weeks down the road. It was such a joyous time and after the proposal we called all our family, friends and then hit the town to celebrate. To this date, I cannot stop looking at the beautiful ring that he had made for me. It is truly stunning!
