How Did You Meet?: We worked at Costco together.
Engagement Story?: It was New Year’s Eve, and we were planning on going to the Red Wings game that evening with Nate’s brother and sister-in-law. The tickets to the game were Christmas gifts from Nate’s parents. I worked that day, and Nate picked me up when I got off work at 3 PM and we headed to Carraba’s for dinner to meet Seth and Sasha. On the way there, Nate asked me what I wanted to do after the game as far as where to stay the night. I wasn’t planning on drinking much at all because I had been sick with walking pneumonia and was taking a steroid and antibiotic. (This of course was a bummer, seeing as it was New Year’s Eve.) So I told him I could drive us home if he wanted to have a few drinks. He suggested maybe we stay at his parents’ house, and I said that I didn’t really care what we did. And then he said, “Just kidding…I booked us a hotel room for the night. I’ve already checked us in so we can go there at the end of the evening.” Most girls would probably have a suspicion about this, but I was completely oblivious. So we went to dinner and the Red Wings game, and went back to Nate’s parents’ house afterwards to visit and to watch the ball drop at midnight together. We celebrated the New Year and made all of our phone calls to family, and then we got ready to go to the hotel for the night. We arrived at the hotel and got out of the car. He grabbed my hand as we walked in, and at that moment, I had this feeling of, “Oh my gosh…what if he proposes tonight?” And then I immediately shut that feeling down, because I didn’t think this would be the night. Nate had just bought a house, so I knew he just spent a lot of money and probably didn’t have the extra funds to buy a ring. So we got into our room, and I see an ice bucket and a bottle of champagne on the center of the bed, with two flutes next to it. I still didn’t suspect a thing and just thought he was being sweet and romantic like he is. He went down the hall to fill the bucket with ice and I waited for him to come back. He poured us each a glass, and looked into my eyes and asked me what my goals were for this new year. I remember telling him that I wanted to graduate my radiography program, find a good job, and to become engaged at some point in the year. (I had always thought he would wait until June when I finished school to pop the question.) He then shared with me that his goal for the year was to become engaged to me. He took my glass away and set both of them down. He turned me around and wrapped his arms around me, and swayed me back and forth, as he told me how much he loved me and how amazing he thought I was. This went on for a couple minutes, until he let go and said, “There is something I need you to do for me.” I was still facing away from him, and I said, “Okay….”, not knowing what to expect. Then, I turned around, and he was down on one knee with an open ring box. I was in COMPLETE SHOCK!!! I honestly can’t remember what he said…I think it was something along the lines of, “I want to spend the rest of my life with you….will you marry me?” I didn’t know what to say at first because I was in such shock. I remember saying, “OMG…OMG…babe…really? OMG…” and he said, “So…..is that a yes?” And I said, “YES, OF COURSE!!!” And then I cried I think…and then I made him tell me his plan of proposing, and if he had talked to my dad, and all that other stuff girls need to know. (He talked to my dad, AND my brother, which was awesome.) Nate had told me around Christmas of 2010 that there would be a ring on my finger SOMETIME in 2011….little did I know, he planned on proposing during the FIRST HOUR of 2011. That’s my Nate though…so romantic. 🙂
